Engineering leadership, from chip to cloud.

For 30 years I've built and led the teams behind embedded and cloud products, in sectors from medical devices and aerospace to defence and smart buildings. Now I help companies do the same: as an interim engineering lead, an independent voice on architecture, or the person who sees a platform transformation through.

30 years delivering embedded and cloud products
300+ engineers on a platform whose technical direction I set
85+ consultants led as Head of Engineering

How I can help

Six ways of working together, from a focused review to leading an engineering organisation for as long as you need. All of them hands-on where it counts.

01

Interim & fractional engineering leadership

When you need a head of engineering, CTO or chief architect before you can hire one, or alongside the one you have. I set the technical direction, build the team and the way it works, then hand over cleanly.

Good for a gap at the top, a team that has outgrown its structure, a board that wants a roadmap it can trust.

02

Architecture & technology reviews

An independent look at a platform, product or roadmap, ending in a written recommendation you can act on: what to keep, what to change and in what order.

Good for before a big investment, after an acquisition, or when a platform has stopped scaling.

03

Platform transformation

Leading the hard middle of re-platforming from inside the team: consolidating products onto one platform, moving a desktop product to the cloud, or modernising how software is built and released.

Good for several products on diverging platforms, or a desktop product that needs to become a cloud service.

04

Regulated & embedded products

Embedded Linux, device platforms and product security, delivered under IEC 62304, DO-178, MISRA C and similar standards, where 'move fast and break things' isn't an option.

Good for medical, industrial, aerospace, defence and other safety-critical products.

05

Moving to Rust

Planning and leading a move to Rust for its memory safety. I've already done this where it matters most: the critical part of an embedded device's boot path now runs on Rust. For your codebase, that means choosing where to start, bringing the team up to speed, working alongside existing C and C++, and keeping regulated delivery on track.

Good for embedded and systems teams facing growing memory-safety expectations from customers and regulators.

06

Agentic AI in engineering

As a consultant, I've built agentic workflows that automatically enforce the same conventions across every repository, from first commit to release. I've also built tools for organisation analysis, dashboards that show how an engineering organisation really works, and automation for the everyday tasks that eat into a team's time. All of it comes with the guardrails that regulated and safety-minded work needs.

Good for teams that want real productivity from AI rather than a demo, without losing audit trails or quality.

Track record

A selection from 30 years, some for clients and some as part of an in-house team. Names are left out; the work, the scale and the outcomes are as they happened.

Medical devices

Four Linux platforms into one

Built a platform team of eight that grew to around 40 engineers, and consolidated four independently developed Linux platforms into a single architecture, with the first release delivered within a year. Regression testing fell by about 30%, and four platforms to maintain became one. Also owned the platform's device security. It now underpins a monitoring portfolio sold in the US, EU and APAC, developed under IEC 62304.

SaaS · design software

From desktop product to cloud-native SaaS

Recruited and led a team of six, reporting to the CTO, to re-implement a desktop building-design validation product as a cloud service. Set up the infrastructure, team structure and engineering process from scratch, built for high data volumes and highly variable compute load.

Cloud architect · technical lead, SaaS platform

Industrial · smart buildings

Technical direction for a global platform

Owned the solution architecture and long-term roadmap of a global manufacturer's next-generation digital platform, across a 300+ engineer organisation, working directly with VP and C-level stakeholders. Led an R&D prototype in machine vision for safety automation.

Senior chief systems engineer

Open source consulting

Leading an 85-person consulting practice

Accountable for the technical direction, commercial performance and culture of an international open source engineering function. Much of the work was helping customers understand open source and work with it effectively, alongside strategy, standards, budget and delivery quality.

Head of Engineering

Space & aerospace

Embedded Linux from concept to production

Thirteen years as technical authority for embedded Linux and custom hardware across a whole device portfolio for space, aerospace and industrial programmes. Won programme contracts through direct pre-sales work, and led the technical integration after an acquisition.

Defence

Safety-critical software and radar signal processing

Where it started: safety-critical defence software, signal processing for a combat-aircraft radar system, real-time machine vision, and custom network protocol design and integration.

About me

I started out writing safety-critical defence software and radar signal-processing code, then spent 13 years as technical authority for embedded Linux and custom hardware on space, aerospace and industrial programmes.

Since 2014 I've worked from Finland: leading a medical-device platform used across a global product portfolio, taking a desktop product to cloud-native SaaS, setting the technical direction for a global smart-building platform and running an 85-person open source consulting practice.

Infinite Device Labs is how I now work with companies. You work with me directly, from first call to handover. References and a full background are available on request, from the first call onwards.

How it works

Every engagement starts the same way, whatever its size.

  1. 01

    A first conversation

You tell me what's going on and I ask a lot of questions. It's how we both find out whether I'm the right fit, and you can ask for references at this point.

  2. 02

    A short written proposal

What I'd do, how long it should take and what it will cost, in plain language. Nothing starts until you've agreed to it.

  3. 03

The work, then a clean handover

Hands-on from day one, with regular check-ins along the way. I finish by leaving the decisions documented and a team that can carry on without me.

Tell me what you're working on.

A short description is plenty. I read every message myself and reply within three working days.
